Open suitcase neatly packed with travel layers, packing cubes, and a travel cup

How to Pack for Any Weather (Without Overpacking)

The biggest packing mistake travelers make? Packing for the worst case instead of packing smart. Here's how to stay prepared for unpredictable weather without lugging a suitcase that weighs as much as you do.

Layer, don't bulk. A lightweight thermal base layer, a mid-layer fleece, and a packable wind/rain shell will cover you from mild to freezing. These three pieces take up less space than one heavy coat.

Choose fabrics that travel. Merino wool is your best friend — it regulates temperature, resists odor, and looks put-together. One merino piece works from a cold morning hike to a warm afternoon café.

Accessories do the heavy lifting. A compact scarf, a foldable beanie, and a pair of gloves add warmth without adding weight. Toss in a hand warmer for extra insurance on cold days.

Don't forget your drink. Staying hydrated in changing climates matters more than most travelers realize. An insulated travel cup handles hot tea in the cold and iced water in the heat — one item, two seasons.

Pack once. Roam everywhere.
